Our vision for a beautiful world

Close to our hearts are both a responsible perspective on our environment and a holistic approach to sustainability.

Design

Sustainable, by nature.

Boråstapeter is one of few Swedish wallpaper producers. All our production is conducted in our facilities in Viared outside Borås, from design to finished products. This gives us full process control and the possibility to be responsible throughout. We have had more than 100 years in refining what we do and how we do it. This applies to such elements as design, choice of materials, production, logistics and energy managing and recycling. Close to our hearts are both a responsible perspective on our environment and a holistic approach to sustainability.

Being holistic of course brings the obvious environmental considerations – minimising climate impact, adhering to legislation and at the same time developing new ways to

contribute to a better world. But it also means taking care of people, those in our production and those who live where our wallpaper can be found. We also strive for sustainability over time, as we aim for long-lasting products, by style and in quality. Our products are born as design ideas, and from the very beginning we include concerns of sustainability. We follow and create trends, while aiming for patterns and colours that can be appreciated over time. We also like to delve deep into our large historical archive. There we find many classic collections to be inspired by and to reuse.

Sustainability in all aspects is what we at Boråstapeter promise. We constantly monitor the world around us and work to improve our products – all the time.

15

Together with UNICEF, Boråstapeter work to support children to have a safer upbringing. We donate SEK 15 to UNICEF for each sold roll of wallpaper from the Scandinavian Designers Mini children’s collection.

AR

Environmentally safe digitalisation, of course! Boråstapeter’s new app Wonderwall AR reduces the amount of wallpaper samples, as you test wallpaper digitally.

6,35

Approximately how many tonnes of water that is cleaned annually in the treatment plant at Boråstapeter.

2,2

2.2 millions of kg of colour and paints are used annually, creating our designs. The left-over paint is saved and reused, when our colour experts make new colours.

Material

The right material sense.

Our wallpapers are made from either paper or non-woven material. Our base paper is a blend of mechanically unbleached pulp and chemically bleached pulp to give the best properties. The bleached pulp consists of so-called ecf pulp, Elemental Chlorine Free. The base paper is PVC-free and processed as environmentally friendly as possible. The non woven wallpapers are based on a mixture of cellulose and polyester fibre. For most grades, the cellulose is of tcf quality, Totally Chlorine-Free and from other ECFs.

We do not use solvent-based colours. Our water-based paints and dyes are free from pvc, environmentally harmful and allergenic substances as well as heavy metals, even if it is not required in all countries.

The wallpaper is often given a surface treatment for durability, making it better to withstand stains and easier to clean. This can also give a desired surface finish or appearance. The surface layer mainly consists of acrylic resin and matte glaze.

All packaging material is recyclable. The wallpaper roll is wrapped in a thin polyolefin film, and the boxes are made of cardboard paper. The wallpaper itself is not considered hazardous waste and can be recycled with energy recovery.

We of course continuously work with improvements concerning climate impact. This means following the development in finding better material solutions. It also means choosing materials and suppliers with care. Our main supplier conducts environmentally friendly forestry with no clear-cutting and with the careful replanting of trees. All to help reduce carbon dioxide emissions and to reduce global warming.

Production

A heritage to dye for.

Boråstapeter is based in Viared outside Borås, in Sweden, where the production is also located. Therefore, we have great possibilities to constantly improve the manufacturing process from a sustainability point of view. Our easy access and overview mean control, both geographically and in terms of processes.

Since our materials and processes are basically harmless to the environment no advanced chemical purification plants with flue gas filters or similar are needed in the manufacturing process. We also compensate for the little emissions we have and only use renewable energy in our factory.

We focus a lot on reducing energy consumption both at suppliers and in our processes. Much of the energy used in production, including that for printing and drying, is recovered through a waste heat recovery unit and used for facility heating.

To further take care of environment and surroundings, we have our own water treatment plant. Here, all colour and dye residues are separated from the process sewer so that only controlled and clear water is fed into the municipal sewage system for final purification. All emissions are monitored and measured, and well below all current set limits.

We work systematically with continuous improvements in order to streamline production and to minimise spill and residual waste. The waste that cannot be recycled is used for energy recovery in the district heating plant, replacing the need for other fossil fuels.

124

An equivalent of 124 peoples’ water use is annually purified in Boråstapeter’s own treatment plant.

36

During 2019 we recycled 36 tonnes of cardboard paper.

600

In 2019, we delivered over 600 tonnes of combustible material to the local district heating plant, to be energy recovered and converted it into district heating water.

0.14

0.141 cubic feet per kg wallpaper, that’s how small the average transport volume is, including packaging. With optimised volumes, we reduce the number of transports and lessen the climate impact.

Transports

Delivering with care.

Our environmental responsibility does not end with our wallpaper leaving the factory, quite the opposite. Transportation is one of the areas where we as a producer take great responsibility, both in how we pack our products and organise our logistics and by which partners we choose.

For example, we buy all our paper from Northern Europe to reduce the environmental impact.

Boråstapeter's transport strategy is based on the fact that we have production in one place. It helps us to organise deliveries so that the transports are as few as possible and that the climate impact is reduced.

All transports depart from Boråstapeter’s own warehouse, in close proximity to the factory. We are pleased that the logistics partner we work with in Sweden, db Schenker, is dedicated to the environmental issue. With their transport solutions and so-called green logistics, they are regarded as a pioneer in the transport industry.

For international deliveries we collaborate with ups, a logistics company that shares our values regarding sustainable solutions with less environmental impact.

The use of climate friendly transport and fuels, green logistics and carbon dioxide emissions compensation are other elements that reduce our environmental impact.

Certificates

Guaranteed responsibility.

Our production is governed and regulated by a variety of certificates and markings that guarantee things like environmental responsibility, safety, health and quality. They also apply to emissions, design protection and code of conduct.

The Forest Stewardship Council (fsc) is one of the most important certificates in our industry. This means that we exclusively use fsc-certified material from sustainable forestry with traceable origin. This means that every tree lost to production is replaced by a newly planted tree. The fsc certificate also guarantees that the entire production chain is safeguarding biodiversity, ecologically valuable environments and cultural heritage, as well as contractual and secure working conditions for the employees.

Our wallpapers are ce marked, which among other things guarantees that the requirements for environment, safety and health are met. All of our manufacturing complies with or

exceeds the European environmental requirements and the industry’s own product requirements, set by igi, the Global Wallcoverings Association.

The wallpapers are also fire resistance rated according to product standards. They meet the product requirement for emissions of volatile organic substances, according to the applicable building material classification, m1 emission class For Building Material, after tests of rise. The test results show no detectable quantities and are therefore by margin well below set limits, meaning that the wallpaper does not have a negative impact on indoor environments.

Our products are also certified by Sunda hus and Byggvarubedömningen (the Swedish Building Products Assessment).

208,7

208.7 million hectares of world forests are currently certified by FSC. The material our wallpapers are made of comes from these forests. FSC guarantees, for example, replanting and acceptable working conditions.
