Hats off to Malinda Damgaard
She has previously designed an acclaimed hat fashion for Swedish royalty and was named Accessory Designer of the Year. Now Malinda Damgaard has created a collection of hats in a whole new material: wallpaper from Boråstapeter.
Malinda Damgaard is the Swedish fashionist and millinear whose hats adorns international celebrities and royalty. She has got free hands to create in a brand new material: wallpaper. The result? Unique head pieces in surprising pattern combinations.
- Malinda's design ideas and our wallpaper collections have combined better than we could ever hope for and become unique works of art, says Karin Boo Wiklander, PR & Content Manager at Boråstapeter.
The collection consists of five different hats whose shapes are inspired by the wallpaper patterns themselves. For example, the intricately shaped hat Dahlia Rose is made from the wallpaper Dahlia Garden from Boråstapeter's collection Falsterbo III. But the inspiration has also come from female role models such as Grace Kelly and 18th-century mathematician Clelia Grillo Borromeo.
- One of the hats is based on her mathematical curve which really fascinates me. The shapes were further reinforced by the wallpaper patterns. Right now I'm analyzing the curve further to see how I can use it in the future, says Malinda Damgaard.
It's the first time Malinda Damgaard works with wallpaper but she knows the material well.
-My dad is a painter in the fourth generation, so it's really strange that I haven't come up with the idea of making hats from wallpaper before. But it has also been a challenge. Fabric that I work with otherwise is so much more malleable than wallpaper, so I've had to think and create in a whole new way, she says.
Patterns for the hats is from the collections Graceful Stories, Falsterbo III and the upcoming The Apartment. The hats will be in Boråstapeter's booth C02: 06 at Stockholm Furniture & Light Fair 2020.
