RENAISSANCE

1500s

The word “Renaissance” means “rebirth”, and refers to the renewed interest in antiquity that reached Sweden in the 1500s. The style is ornate, with embellishments and frills. In renaissance patterns absolute symmetry was the ideal, as embodied by the Rosenvinge pattern.

ROCOCO AND THE GUSTAVIAN STYLE

1700s

These styles are characterised by free, playful forms that don’t need to adhere to a strict regularity. In wallpaper patterns, the trellis form often makes an appearance. Colours are light and bright, and have a clear natural influence. Linné and Tessin are typical Rococo wallpapers.

EMPIRE AND ECLECTICISM

1800s

The empire style is characterised by classical forms, and features triumphal arches and columns embellished by ornaments, preferably gilded. Eclecticism is exactly what it sounds like: a mix of a range of different styles, inspired by decorative motifs from previous eras.

ART NOUVEAU

1890-1910

Art Nouveau is considered the first modern style. Meaning “new art” in French, the style is recognisable by its organic, lush, aspirational forms. Plants and flowers are often depicted.

MODERNISM & ART DECO

1920-1930

Modernism is marked by simple, stylised, geometric shapes and patterns. The Art Deco style was a reaction to the scaled-back ideals of modernism, using the forms of the latter, but in a more decorative, glamorous and life-affirming way.
