Despite the strong influence of functionalism in 1940s design, especially in architecture with its austere practical forms, the calming and romantic pastel flowers of the 1930s continued to live on. Our beloved pattern Herbarium, designed by Stig Lindberg in 1947 is a good example of this alluring wallpaper style.
By the mid 20th century, modernism was in full swing with relaxed linear patterns and loose, large floral designs. Dense botanical patterns such as Hazel are typical of this time. During the second half of the 50's, abstract organic forms in mild pastel tones of light yellow, light blue and grey became popular. Recreate the easy living and playful charm of the post-war era.
During the era of peace, love and rock’n’roll, bold and vivid geometric shapes in soft and pale tones were a must have in the home. The decade started with tight with straight geometric patterns, with a tendency for discreet colour palettes such as light grey or beige. In the late 1960s, bolder colours such as orange, brown and green took over and large-flowered wallpapers were back in vogue. The hand drawn leaves of Viola Gråsten's Amorina wallpaper is typical of this decade.
After the muted tones of the 1960s came a new craze for patterned wallpapers in vibrant, happy colours. ABBA was the band of the moment and interior design style changed in character with softer, rounded shapes, stylised large-floral prints blended with medallion designs and a fantastic Arts and Crafts rejuvenation. Capture the confidence of the 1970s with our Anita wallpaper from the Vårt Arkiv collection.
