Wallpaper murals or custom fit wallpapers

That’s how you do it

  • Preparation: If the wall is already covered with patterned wallpaper or a dark, solid-colour wallpaper, it needs to be removed or properly covered before you start*. Make sure the surface is clean, dry, smooth, and stable. Fill any holes or uneven areas with filler, then sand the wall until it is even.

  • Measuring & cutting: Your wallpaper is delivered as one complete roll. We recommend cutting the panels at the scissor marks before hanging. Each panel is numbered — place them in order before you begin.

Decide where it will be easiest to start on your wall. If you’re hanging from the right, start with the last panel. If you’re hanging from the left, start with the first panel.

Measure and draw a vertical plumb line approximately 49 cm from the corner where you plan to start. Use a spirit level to ensure the line is perfectly straight — this will help you hang the wallpaper evenly.

  • Apply paste to the wall: Use a paste specifically for non-woven wallpaper. Apply the paste directly onto the wall using a roller, in a thin and even layer. Work in sections of one to two panel widths at a time.

  • Hanging the first panel: Start at the top and hang the first panel in the corner, aligning it carefully with your plumb line. Use a wallpaper smoothing tool to press the wallpaper into place and remove any air bubbles. Trim off excess wallpaper at the ceiling and skirting board using a sharp wallpaper knife. Wipe away any excess paste with a soft, damp sponge.

  • Continue with the next panels: Hang the next panel edge to edge as closely as possible without overlapping, and match the pattern. Repeat the same steps: smooth out, remove air bubbles, trim neatly, and wipe away any excess paste. Continue panel by panel until the wall is complete.

Tip! Change the blade in your wallpaper knife regularly — a sharp blade gives the cleanest result.

Good luck — enjoy your beautiful new wallpaper!

*Please note: Boråstapeter Studio wallpapers and our wall murals are non-woven and are applied directly to the wall like our other wallpapers, but they are not fully opaque. For best results, we recommend applying them onto a plain, light-coloured base surface.
