My Feldt at Skolberget

Stepping inside the old school building in Oskarström feels like entering another world. Every corner holds lovingly hand-painted details, the café counter overflows with pastries, and My Feldt’s hand-drawn wallpaper patterns climb the walls. But the journey here has been anything but easy.

Chef, pastry chef, illustrator, TV host, author, or social media personality—these are just a few of the titles My Feldt could have chosen over the years. If she had wanted to. But it becomes clear quite quickly that she’s someone who doesn’t like to put herself in a box.

– I just want to do fun things! And I want to make people happy. Life is like a sparkler—suddenly it’s burned out and everything’s over.

The desire to do what she loves most led her to open the bakery Feldts Bröd & Konfekt in Halmstad 13 years ago—a chapter that came to a close last year. Along the way, she also opened a carnival kiosk and an ice cream stand—two imaginative spaces where food and sweetness were the common thread.

But the past year has been about much more than semla buns and cinnamon swirls. When I meet My Feldt, she’s just come out of a whirlwind year. What started as a sudden impulse during a walk in her hometown of Oskarström quickly grew into the most ambitious project of her life.

– I didn’t have a personal connection to the place, other than walking past it countless times and knowing the building was abandoned. But like it often goes for me, the step from idea to action was short. I called my brother Putte—my partner in everything—and told him about the idea. Of course, he said yes immediately, My laughs.

In just one year, the once
rundown school in
Oskarström has been
transformed into a vibrant
meeting place, restaurant,
and café.

The rundown school building was built in the 1920s and once housed a gym, a woodworking classroom, and even a chapel. The main building next door, the former Mared School, burned to the ground eight years ago.

Neither of them had any idea what it would really take to turn the old building into a vibrant meeting place and restaurant—or how challenging the journey would be.

– In my head, it was just about borrowing a little money from the bank. I thought, “This can’t cost that much.” It’s lucky I didn’t know what was coming. I cried so much during this period and felt like it just wasn’t going to work. That’s so unlike me—usually, I believe anything is possible.

If someone told me I had to compete against Gunde Svan in cross-country skiing, my first thought would be, “Sure, I can win!” That’s always been my mindset.

She explains that the financial pressure has been the hardest part. Twice, the money ran out completely, and it was unclear whether Skolberget would ever open.

– I rarely feel afraid, but this time, I did. Not knowing whether we could pull it off was tough. I remember so clearly the summer of 2023 when we were about to celebrate in the garden with sandwich cake and champagne, and I got a call from my accountant telling me the money was gone.

”Många tror att jag är en person som har en massa pengar men det är jag inte, jag är bara en kreativ person som vill göra saker.”

How did you take it?
– I broke down crying, ran outside, sat under a tree, and started hyperventilating. Everything came to a halt after that call. All I could think about was having to send everyone home. And after the sandwich cake and champagne, everyone left.

From the beginning, My has been open and transparent about money and finances. On Instagram, over 100,000 people have followed her through both setbacks and successes—emotionally and financially.

– People often think I have lots of money, but I don’t. I’m just a creative person who wants to make things. It’s important to me that people know there’s a huge amount of work behind the scenes. And you have to spend money on things no one thinks about—like toilet paper for thousands of kronor. That means you have to sell an insane number of cinnamon buns just to break even.

Eventually, construction at Skolberget was able to resume—albeit in a scaled-down version—and on a rainy day in July 2024, Feldts at Skolberget opened its doors to the public for the first time.

– I cried, the guests cried—it was beautiful and freeing! There are still so many dreams left to fulfill here. We haven’t even gotten halfway. But I realized we had to prioritize and finish what was absolutely necessary to be able to open on time.

From the outside, it’s hard to believe that Skolberget isn’t finished. My Feldt’s creative touch is visible in every corner—nothing has been left without love. Color, playfulness, imagination, and her fearless approach shine through in the interior.

– So many people are afraid when it comes to decorating! I know so many who don’t even dare hang a painting because they don’t want holes in the wall. I truly believe that if people were less afraid, they would create and experience so much more. There are so many truly terrible and dangerous things in the world—a little color or a nail hole in the wall really isn’t a big deal.

”Skolberget ligger mitt i grönskan och jag ville att det skulle kännas som att allt det gröna vuxit in i huset.”

In the entrance, visitors are
welcomed by pastel pink
walls and the hand-painted
Violetta pattern by My Feldt.

Crossing the threshold of the old schoolhouse, you’re greeted by a dainty floral wallpaper bursting with pink and violet flowers and trailing nasturtium. The pattern, named Violetta, was drawn by hand by My in collaboration with Boråstapeter. The lush nasturtium runs like a green thread through every room at Skolberget.

– We lived on a row house street when I was a kid, and one day they built this ugly wall in front of the houses, and all the neighbors hated it. I remember my mom saying she would make it the most beautiful wall in the world. So she planted nasturtium, and when it started trailing down the wall, everyone began to love it. For me, nasturtium stands for the idea that you can change your own situation.

In addition to Violetta, the collection for Boråstapeter includes Trädgårdskrasse and Grönska. The latter, with its large green nasturtium leaves, decorates both the walls and the ceiling in the old gymnasium, creating an almost seamless transition between indoors and outdoors.

– Skolberget sits right in the middle of the greenery, and I wanted it to feel like all of that green had grown into the house. I’ve always loved huts—forest hideouts—and I used to love sitting under spruce trees or up in a tree. So I knew I wanted the gym to feel like you were surrounded by leaves. My first thought was to paint everything by hand, but that would’ve taken months.

In the old gymnasium, tables
and chairs are set up for
Skolberget’s guests.
The wallpaper Grönska
is visible on the wall.

All of the patterns were designed with Skolberget in mind, and the original plan was for them to exist only here. But that idea was quickly abandoned when interest exploded on My’s social media.

– So many people commented, saying the wallpaper would be perfect for their kitchen or summer house. Then it felt wonderful to let my patterns become part of other people’s dreams. Who am I to keep them to myself, just because I drew them?

It’s clear that Skolberget holds deep emotional value for many. That’s especially obvious from all the local visitors who continue to approach My to thank her for bringing the place back to life.

And it’s not just the guests who have recognized the effort—in autumn 2024, Skolberget received the Halmstad Architecture Prize for its high design quality and environmental sustainability.

Now that you’re on the other side—what do you hope visitors feel when they come here?
– For me, Skolberget became exactly what I didn’t know I wanted. And that’s how I hope people feel when they come here. Skolberget should be something you didn’t know you longed for.
